Members can label their books and leave them in public places for random people to pick up, keep, read, and pass along to someone else. Go to secure.bookcrossing.com and purchase the starter kit. Once you’ve received your packet, label three of your books with the provided materials and then simply leave a copy of your book at a coffee shop, on a park bench, at a hotel when you are on vacation, wherever you feel the urge.

Good Reads - This is a free site to start an open book club, discuss good reads and develop your own personal list of books you like to read, then share your list with other members.

Library Thing - This is a social networking site for bookworms, like me. If you are an author, chances are you’re a reading addict as well. You can develop a list of books you love to create your virtual library to share with others.

Social Networking Sites

Facebook - Facebook isn’t just about befriending the masses, like MySpace; it’s about real friends. It’s a website dedicated to fun. For instance, people can chat and interact in lots of online games, etc.

To keep it a personal experience, Facebook has limited your friend count to only allow a person to have 5000 friends on your page. Once you reach the limit, you cannot accept any new friends unless you un-friend some of them. What to do??? Don’t worry, that’s only your personal page. Once you start your personal Facebook profile, create a fan page. Go to facebook.com/pages/create.php. The beauty of the fan page is that it allows you to connect with so many more people. It’s a fantastic marketing tool simply for the internal email blasting capabilities. You can blast your entire list at the click of a button. With your personal page, you can only email twenty people at a time. Just think, if you had 5000 friends on your profile and you wanted to let them all know you were doing a book signing, you’d have to resend that email two hundred-fifty times to reach your entire list!

Start your fan page today. Add pictures of your books, add full descriptions of your books in the profile under My Books and begin building a following, build your Facebook friend list, and utilize the power of bulk email blasting!

Twitter - Twittering has blown up in a big way. It is a simple way to keep your friends and fans up to date on all that’s going on in your world. Twitter allows you to make short posts aka “tweets” up to 140 characters in length to promote your events, post links to your videos, announce your latest news, etc. People can follow your tweets and you can become fans of other people on Twitter as well, which allows you to “follow” their tweets. People can forward your tweets, and will if it’s newsworthy. This is how you spread the word. So what does this all mean? Post a great tweet and it can spread the planet! Use Twitter to your advantage. Be thoughtful in your wording, because you are limited to 140 letters and/or numbers per tweet. This isn’t good news if you want to promote a link that is super-duper long. If you need to shorten your url, I know a way around it. Go to tinyurl.com.
